Gameplay is presented from a first-person perspective as you trek around the national park examining unexplained occurrences, reading notes from other watchman and exploring the world around you. The next day I noticed that Henry had removed the wedding ring from his finger. At one point Delilah decided to flirt with me so I flirted back. Henry’s attitude also changes depending on some of the conversations. At one point in the game I chose to accuse Delilah of talking about me to another watchman, and she got upset and stopped talking to me for a portion of the day, leaving Henry bored and alone. Depending on your answers, Delilah’s opinion of Henry changes and she may treat you completely differently.

Players have the choice of how they shape the relationship between the two, and you have the option to respond to anything Delilah asks Henry. They start off hesitant to talk about themselves but begin to open up as the story progresses. The writing and voice work is excellent, and the dynamic between the pair grows throughout the game much like a real relationship would. The communication between both of these characters is the meat of Firewatch. The pace of how things begin to happen and the random news clippings and letters left by other watchman expand superbly on both the story and the conversations between Henry and Delilah. Firewatch begins to weave a tale with plenty surprises and many misdirections which had me hooked to the point that I couldn’t put it down until I reached the end. It’s here that things start to go wrong for Henry. Hoping to get away from his life, Henry decides to spend the summer in solitude, but his peace is quickly interrupted by his supervisor Delilah who sends him off to stop a rowdy group of campers setting off fireworks. What are your thoughts? Am I being overly harsh? I’d love to hear what you thought of the game. After his emotional rollercoaster Henry takes a job as a fire watchman in the Wyoming wilderness. Still, for £15 I’m glad that I played it. I was also disappointed that there wasn’t more to do in terms of finding things during the story, and the glitchy framerates can get a little frustrating. Scott Fitzgerald used to base so many of his works on (useless fact), the journey is more rewarding than the end result.įirewatch was such a cool concept, and such an aesthetically impressive experience, I’m just a little disappointed with how quickly it ended, and how it ended. It happened with The Sopranos, Lost (to an extent) and I had the same feeling with this game. Like many people, in general I become a little unfulfilled at the end of something I have previously enjoyed. Now we finally get to see Delilah! What happens then? Oh she isn’t here, but there’s a helicopter! How cool would it be if you get on the helicopter and you have a couple of scenes back at home, maybe with your wife, or at least some shots in a different location? Oh, that’s it. Okay so Ned was the bad guy and the stalker, that was that.

I found the discovery of the body fairly interesting, and enjoyed looking through the camp site as well, but ultimately the ending just felt like a little bit of an easy way out. So I still don’t fully get why Ned cares about Henry, I guess there is an element of self preservation, and not wanting to be found, but seriously why all the surveillance? This built up far more hope in me than transpired. So the mystery turned out to be linked to a tragic accident, and whilst this makes it quite gritty, my conspiratorial mind was a little disappointed that there weren’t darker arts at play. It’s a very short game, absolutely stunning but if I’m honest, it feels as if the last portion was a little rushed.
